norelem-sponsored team makes light work of Solar Challenge 2017

A team of participants from Jönköping University (JU), Sweden secured 8th place at this year’s Solar Challenge after developing an innovative solar-powered vehicle using components sourced from
THE BIG GREEN BOOK.
The annual event brings together teams from top global universities to compete against one another in a gruelling solar-powered car race though the Australian outback. Aimed at advancing research into solar-powered vehicle technology, Solar Challenge participants must come up with a vehicle design able to withstand the 3,000km journey by striking a balance between vehicle power and energy efficiency. Prototype vehicles undergo months of rigorous testing and optimisation to ensure they are up to the demands of the race. This inevitably creates demand for components and spare parts.
The result was a marked improvement on previous performance, with the team having finished in 15th position in the previous year’s event.
The Management Team Leader at JU’s Solar Team explained: “Solar Challenge is a real test of endurance which requires months and months of preparation. During this period, we continually refined our car design so that the suspension, aerodynamics and electronics were just right. Given the challenges that we faced along the way, it was great to have the support of norelem, who helped meet all our component needs. Any time we needed a component, they delivered. All we had to do was look in THE BIG GREEN BOOK.”
Taking part in the challenger class, Team JU was one of 25 teams taking part in the race. In one of the rainiest solar challenges to date, the race saw only 12 teams finish the event due to restricted levels of sunlight.
We are proud to have been able to support the team from Jönköping University and we expect to see great things from them in the future.
